You are wonderful, and there is nothing you can do about it.
You might smile at this, but I’m not joking. You are. Your core self was designed by a being who can only create magnificent things. And that includes you.
For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,
I know that full well. Psalm 139:13–14
Our wonderful core selves, however, get buried. Let me explain with a simple exercise. Draw a small circle. This is your true, core self. Now draw another circle around it and another, and then imagine one hundred more. Difficult experiences, harsh messages, and cultural ideals add layer after layer of false ideas about who we think we are or should be. Imagine how many were layers were added in our preteen years alone!
The good news is that we don’t forget who we really are. We can’t. Our core selves are eternal. They can’t be altered or lost. We just need the tools to unearth them.
And when we do, we are set free. We discover what sets us uniquely on fire. We learn what we need in order to make strong decisions. We gain access to resilient self-esteem. And we find we have more energy for others than we ever thought possible. I have seen this progression over and over with my clients and experienced it myself.
This is the un-resolution. Instead of adding something new to our lives, we remove what doesn’t belong to us. We stop striving to be more or better and choose instead to shed our layers and just be the wonderful people we already are. I repeat, already are.
And it isn’t hard. We just need the right tools. Stay tuned for my next post “Tool #1 for Unearthing Who You Are.”
And Happy New Year Wonderful You!
